5 Steps to Make Your Own Creative Space

Out of all of the rooms of my tiny condo, I spend most of my time in my den. It gets more sunlight than any other room which makes it a good place for me to get creative especially over an extended amount of time.

The only issue is that there is no closet in this room so there is a lack of storage space. But I made it work.

It doesn’t matter whether you have a tiny den or a small bedroom… you can make any space into an inspiration spot!

If you don’t think you have the room for it, you can make yourself a creative space you would want to spend all day in.

Step 1: Select a Spot You Feel Would Inspire You

Have you always wanted to have a creative spot right by the window? Do you feel that a certain corner looks like it would be really cozy and you love the idea of putting a cool desk or chair there? Well, go for it!

There are a lot of affordable options now that you can even make even a tiny section of a room feel like a home office.

Step 2: Declutter and (Take a Deep Breath) Make Some Sacrifices

That spot that you really like has stuff in the way. You have a furniture/bedroom piece or junk you “need” but you have nowhere else to put it.

This is the tough part especially if you have only a teeny bedroom or have a separate but small room that has multiple uses (aka my cat Sam’s room). Start getting rid of the items and art supplies you have not used in a very long time.

Recycle, trash or try selling on eBay. Donate or give to another fellow artist in need. It’ll make you feel good to be helping someone else out and you’ll make a little more room for your creative dream corner.

Next, decide if there is a furniture piece that is really not doing much for you except taking up space. It might be time to chuck it and find something else to replace it.

Step 3: Shopping for Decorations

If your cheap like me, you can find some useful stuff or decorations at Goodwill.

I have bought lots of baskets vases, wall art, art/office supplies, and other neat stuff. And if it doesn’t fit perfect or you change your mind, no worries because you only spent about $2 anyway so not much of a loss.

Also great for people like me who constantly need to change their surroundings without spending a huge amount of money. If the item you purchased is made out of wood or metal, just clean it and/or paint it.

You can also find some good deals at other stores such as TJ Maxx, Marshalls, or Christmas Tree Shops.

Step 4: Furniture

Look for furniture that is multi-functional. Find a bench that is also storage for art supplies.

You can buy storage cubes (like in the pic above) that can hold fabric storage bins or books, but can also use the top of it as a space to work on.

Storage cubes can be found for a really good price just about anywhere (Target or Walmart).

You can also shop online stores such as Wayfair or Overstock for other furniture.

Since I saved a lot of money getting good bargains on decorations and storage furniture, I shopped Wayfair, splurged and bought myself a cool blue pumpkin Papasan chair.

Step 5: Decorate!

Now for the fun part: decorate, rearrange and make it look cool!

Use your own artwork or the art pieces that you already have collected/purchased from other artists or bought at a store. Add shelves on your wall to put books, artwork or decorations on. The possibilities are endless!

Hopefully, this has inspired you a little to go and make a difference for yourself. If you enjoyed this article, please share with your friends or on Pinterest!
